From Gerben.Wierda at rna.nl Thu Nov 2 00:29:12 2006 From: Gerben.Wierda at rna.nl (Gerben Wierda) Date: Thu Nov 2 00:29:44 2006 Subject: [Ii2-announce] TeX based on TeX Live release Message-ID: The TeX (based on TeX Live) i-Package has been released to all the repositories and so have all the support i-Packages: MusixTeX, CM- Super, CB-Greek and the ConTeXt Updater. (The LaTeX Updater will be removed later. For a recent LaTeX, the TeX Live i-Package is the best choice.) The old and new TeX i-Package can both be installed on a system. They do not interfere. There are two special points of attention when migrating from old to new or when keeping them both available for the time being: - Your personal files in ~/Library/texmf are available for both. Especially configuration files like updmap.cfg (font maps) and language.dat (hyphenation patterns) are not compatible with both systems, mainly because file names differ between the two distributions - If you use TeX from the command line, you get either old or new, depending on what is in the system-wide shell startup settings. The values there are set by the configuration phase of either i-Package and the last configuration run defines what is being set there. One other important note: XeTeX is currently only supported on intel. Default install locations are /usr/local/teTeX (old) and /usr/local/ TeXLive (new) The TeX Support i-Packages (except for the LaTeX Updater) can handle both distributions. It could have been the source of the occasional crashes that were reported with version 2.85. Final releases. Message-ID: XFig has been updated. It is now at version 3.2.5-alpha5 and transfig at 3.2.5-alpha7. It has not been compiled with the 3D-widgets from Xaw3d as this makes the application crash immediately when the menu is used. Xaw3d has also been recompiled and updated. NOTE: This will be the last release of the XFig i-Package and the Xaw3d i-Package . 3.2.4 does not compile on a system with a modern compiler and 3.2.5 does not work properly with Xaw3d. Both Xaw3d and Xfig/transfig seem to be unmaintained. I understand I have an internet connection at the Hotel (one wonders at what price, I got one Hotel in France this summer that wanted to charge something like $20 for one day of which I would be able to use 10minutes...) The transition is mostly done, I think. Now the vacation will at first be spent on writing the presentation which is not done by far :-( And there will be a "One more thing..." at the end of the presentation ;-) G From Gerben.Wierda at rna.nl Tue Nov 7 11:15:50 2006 From: Gerben.Wierda at rna.nl (Gerben Wierda) Date: Tue Nov 7 11:16:02 2006 Subject: [Ii2-announce] Re: i-Installer Report In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: On Nov 6, 2006, at 20:50 , Maxwell, Adam R wrote: > Hi Gerben, > > Hope you're enjoying your time away ;). It tried to install a file that had been renamed. I have fixed this. Before that moment, there will be an attempt at one more improvement of i-Installer: using authenticating proxies. And I will work on the documentation of everything. After Jan 1, I will no longer support i-Installer or my i-Packages. I will still use it personally and the incidental i-Package update (e.g. ConTeXt updates) will find its way to the repositores. But I will not offer e-mail support (nor answer it) and I will not do any work unless it is for personal reasons. There are several reasons why I have to end support. The most important reasons are: - The end of teTeX and the volatility of TeX Live. Keeping up with changes in TeX Live is beyond me and the support load that will come from it is *way* beyond me - My day job will take more energy and time (remember: my i-Package/ i-Installer activities have been done in my spare time). - I want to be a TeX *user* for a change. - 6 years have been wonderful but also enough. I will try to leave the setup in such a state that someone else can take it up. I will also be available for advise *if* someone else takes it up but only to a certain level (e.g. I am not going to help people learn perl or Objective-C or Cocoa or etc.) It is not all over yet but I'd like to thank you all for your support and for being such nice, friendly and constructive users. Some small problems have been fixed (e.g. mflogo). Available from the *EXPERIMENTAL* i- Directory. The default install location is still /usr/local/TeXLive. This will change but it is not trivial to do this smoothly for all users. The ConTeXt updater will install a texmfstart script if not yet available. TeX based on TeX Live now has a complete XeTeX (based on what is in TL and I understand not all parts are u-to-date there) Note: Instaling the XeTeX i-Package there will give you a non-working XeTeX 2. The ConTeXt updater installs a texmfstart script on configuration if it is not available yet. G
